Roopak Saluja, a diplobrat born to a Sikh father and a Nepalese mother, has grown up, studied, worked and lived in ten countries on six continents and speaks eight languages. This has left him with a sense of being from nowhere and everywhere.
Ten years of school-hopping across as many schools, mostly of the international variety, was followed by six years at India’s prestigious Doon School, an all-boys boarding school at the foothills of the Himalayas. His undergrad years were then spent on both sides of the Atlantic in upstate New York and Budapest.
Roopak started working in advertising in client servicing at Young & Rubicam Budapest, where he was trained on the Kraft Foods and Danone accounts. A few years later, fed up with yoghurt and chocolate, he decided he wasn’t going to work on anything people bought more than once a year and moved to Ogilvy & Mather Paris to run the Motorola account for Europe, Middle East & Africa, where he was instrumental in managing the development of the Hellomoto campaign.
He quit in 2003 to go to business school and do a few other things after which he found himself setting up and running Bang Bang Films, India’s international production company, that is focused on producing TV commercials as its core business. Bang Bang works extensively with various global offices of agencies like Ogilvy, JWT, Saatchi, McCann Erickson, BBDO, BBH, Wieden & Kennedy, Lowe, Publicis, Y&R, Grey and more and counts the likes of Unilever, Nokia, Pepsi, L’Oreal, P&G, J&J, Sony, Volkswagen, Honda, Tata and among its largest clients.
The setting up of Jack in the Box Worldwide in 2009 culminated in the evolution of Bang Bang into a provider of content-for-brands across multiple platforms and geographies. As, Co-Founder & Managing Director of the two companies, a large part of Roopak’s time and energy is currently focused on building capabilities and rolling out international operations for Bang Bang & Jack in the Box. He is also personally spearheading the creation of proprietary content for the group across multiple platforms including film, TV, online and mobile.
Separately from Bang Bang, Roopak is a member of the Indian Angel Network, a group of eminent entrepreneurs who invest in early-stage startups across a variety of sectors and markets.
He has been a professional trance DJ, performing around the globe from around Europe to South Africa to Goa to Thailand and co-founding and running his own trance label, Procyon Records (Budapest & Paris). He has also acted in a couple of films, holds an MBA from INSEAD in France & Singapore and is addicted to wasabi and several other types of food. There’s probably no suitable time and place but what must be mentioned is his penchant for trivia, especially about capitals and flags.
Roopak now lives in Bombay with his actress wife, Tara and two sons, Zen and Kai, aged 2 and 0 respectively, but is engineering the possibility for the four of them to avoid the city (and country) between the dismal and dastardly monsoon months of June and September on a perpetual basis.
Let’s see what happens…
